I hope you like real MTB films.

April 22nd, 2008 by Dylan

For the past year and a half i have been lucky enough to be working along side Bjorn Enga at Radical Films as assistant editor, helmet cam rider and trail builder. As some of you may or may not know we have been working hard for the past year on the newest addition to the infamous Kranked series, Kranked 7 “The Cackle Factor”. As said in the teaser, this film is a big mountain extravaganza, it has an amazing amount of mountain shredding the whole way through. Check out the teaser here: http://www.radical-films.com/

The film features: Jamie Goldman, Nathan Rennie, Steve Romaniuk, Mike Kinrade, Eric Porter, Kyle Ebbett, Timo Pritzel, James Doerfling, René Wildhaber, Mike Hopkins, Ben Boyko, Kirt Voreis, Garett Buehler, Ryan Berrecloth, Josh Bryceland, Ben Walker, Dylan Dunkerton and Curtis Robinson.

Curtis an I are super stoked to be a part of this film. We worked hard for our segment and it sure turned out awesome! NSMBA is holding the Vancouver premier. Get the info about the premier here.

Ripper #1 of 2008 mang!

April 21st, 2008 by Daniel

Last weekend was the kickoff to the series of spectacular mountain cycling events known as the North Shore Ripper. As always, mother nature had something up her sleeve to throw a different perspective on things compared to other events or dare i say “races”. Last year it was a combo of rain, fog and sun..this year was snow, in April!

Here are a few pics of the guys shreddin up a storm by James Healey

I think T-bone had one too many burritos before the race…

Thanks to my buddy Al for shredding the climb for me!

It Is, Better In The Bahamas!

April 21st, 2008 by Eamonn

Sun ShineOver this past March break, I was fortunate enough to get away to the Bahamas for a little escape from reality (Just Another Reason To Hate Me), and I have to say that if you haven’t been to the Caribbean it is a must do! It is such a beautiful place, and the weather, well let’s just say it is irie

I’ve been home for a few weeks now, and I am just getting over a serious case of PBD, or for those of you who are not in the know, Post-Bahamas Depression! But not to worry, after a few killer rides with the boys I was able to shake it off…if they only had mountains in the Bahamas, I would on the next plane!

The itinerary for the trip was pretty simple; arrive at Nassau (New Providence Island), which is the capital of and largest city in the Bahamas archipelago, and figure it out from there.

Here are some pic’s from our stay in Nassau. The View from our room, and what’s a night with out some giant sized margaritas’ at Senior Frogs?

The view Now that's a drink!

Oh, I neglected to mention that we arrived in the peak of the American spring break, and as a result things were a little of the hook…body shot anyone, and the locals are so friendly!

Body shot Smile!

So after a few days in Nassau, we headed to the more remote, less developed and to the less travelled Eleuthera Island.  After a five hour, and at times, very rocky ferry ride, we arrived at this jewel of an island!

Eleuthera, which has not a single traffic light, is a long and thin island that stretches approximately 100 miles long and in places is little more than 2 miles wide.  Beside Eleuthera’s unreal and seemingly never ending pink sand beaches, another surreal thing about that really struck me about this island is the fact that it is flanked by the Caribbean Sea to the West and the Atlantic Ocean to the East, which is a sight in its self that is almost beyond description.  If you do plan on going to the Bahamas, this Island is a must!

Some shots of the Atlantic Ocean from our cottage, not a bad view to wake up to!
The view The view

Though the Atlantic did have its pounding surf, which was bad ass, the Caribbean side offered much calmer waters, which was ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
Here’s a pic of me working on my Bahamian gang signs, and a self portrait of Kristi and I.

Before I left for the trip I bought a tight little digi camera which is water, shock and freeze proof.  Here’s some underwater action that I captured. The water is so clear, unreal!

Fish Fish

More fish One f'd up looking fish?

Do you need another reason to visit the Bahamas? Umm, I don’t think so! Check it.  Eleuthera’s famous pink sand beaches, miles and miles of them.  Notice the lack of people!

 Please

So nice The beach

The islands area known simply as the ‘Cliffs,’ on the Atlantic side…so killa!

What’s a blog on the Bahamas with out some sunset shots?

As it turned out, our stay on Eleuthera coincided with a local tradition called homecoming. Homecoming was held over the entire duration of the Easter weekend, and the Bahamians love to party! Basically, each settlement or village on the island shut down (even the liquor shack), blocked of there main street, and held a giant festival, including: limbo/fire dancing, live bands, talent shows, local cuisine, street dancing, booze o’plenty, speeches, and even a beauty pageant!  Yep, it was a hell of a time! Home coming is also where I was introduced to Sky-Juice, a fantastic concoction composed of two very simple ingredients-Gin and Coconut water…so good!

The crowds, the main stage, my hook-up for Sky Juice (Jerome) and the kids rip’n it on the stage!

The crowds The main stage

My boy Kill'n it on the dance floor!

There is little doubt that Bahamians are perhaps the friendliest people on this earth, and I think the following pictures demonstrate this fact. We spent the duration of our time in the settlement of JC (James Cistern) and as you can tell by these photos we were well received.

Smile

I love these shots!  I gave this little firecracker of a kid (pictured above in the shot with all the kids dancing on stage-first kid on left) my camera and he went berserk…he basically ran around the festival and took pictures of all the pretty girls in the village, a man after my own heart! When the little man and his posse of screaming kids came back some 10 minutes later to show me their pictures, I told the ring leader that he only had one shot left, and he could take it of anything, but he only had one shot left!  About 5 minutes passed and the kid shows up with these two girls, and after I explained the situation, the girls were more then willing to get there picture taken by this little playa…priceless!

Little playa’s pictures…check out his buddy in the shots!

After our stay at Eleuthera, we headed to the resort Island of Freeport, to finish our va-ka off with some all inclusive resort action.
‘The plane boss, da plane’ and some shots of the Eleuthera from the air.

Resort life-The mandatory gin and water ratio (3 to 1), and the essentials: iPod doc shades and a beach chair.

Some random party shots of the Square in Freeport, good times!

And that is that.  My trip to the Bahamas - 12 days, one blog!

Can’t wait to go back!

“I find it funny…..”

April 5th, 2008 by Curtis

That after just one or two days of beautiful sunshine, you completely forget about the endless amount of nasty/cold/wet and snowy days we had this past winter. Coming off a concussion, while being off the bike for about 3 1/2 weeks, I was ready for my FIX. I kept pestering Dylan to come out with me and take some photos, and of course the Wizard said yes. So thanks to Dylan I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. OH and I actually broke a sweat in this heat!
enjoy.

Dylan in front of the camera for once.

having fun in the sun.

I had another photo session with photog extradoinaire Dan Barham last Sunday deep in heart of North Shore.  Conditions were perfect for shooting, nice and dank ! Here are a couple of the “B” shots which I still think look stellar and captures the true essence of the “North Shore”.

Just Another Reason To Hate Me

March 16th, 2008 by Eamonn

In less then 12 hours, I will boarding a plane to take me to the Bahamas, and with a forecast that is predicting a consistent high of 30 degrees for the next week, it is safe to say that the weather will be just fine! With that being said, I wish everyone a great spring break, and to also enjoy a pint or two for me on St. Patties!

Even though my bikes won’t be making this trip, I’ll see what kind of trouble I can get into down there? So stay tuned for my Bahamas blog, and my tales of an Irishman in the Caribbean!

Spring Cleaning

March 11th, 2008 by jaydub

Spring has sprung and grass is green, well at least some the snow has melted off the local mountains. It was a long winter with lots of snow this year which kept my rides inside collecting dust.

With the snow nearly gone on the local mountains, we’ve been pounding the dirt getting back in shape. I’ve been riding with the usual suspects and with Wade quite a bit. This is how Wade rolls:

Wade has been showing us the trails of yesteryear which has been great. It’s like riding a new trail every ride. At the end of ride, you also have to treat yourself to ice cream after climbing up Old Buck.

This weekend was a good opportunity to get a jump start on the season for some photos with pro mountain bike photographer Dan Barham (www.danbarham.com). My “Weapon of Choice” for 08 is a Specialized Demo 8 decked out with Syncros, Fox and SRAM components weighing in around 39 lbs:

Here’s a recent Syncros pickup for this year…. 2 stacked truckloads, pretty sweet.

With the snow line still fairly low, we hit up a section Digger and I built for NSX 10 (step down to berm then berm) last year. No big deal for Digger moving boulders.

Here are a a couple of the “A” shots from the weekend that Dan allowed me to use for this blog. Thanks Dan ! The “AA” shots will be coming to a magazine near you sometime soon.

I hope everyone keeps the rubberside down and has fun this season !

A Promising Future

March 5th, 2008 by Eamonn

The SignIn the midst of a sea of rumours regarding permanent trail closers by the District of North Vancouver, more then two dozen individuals including myself were once again issued building and maintenance permits by the very same authority.

Despite the speculation of impending doom for our beloved network of trails, things are, in reality, promising for a lack of a better word when considering the future of mountain biking on the Shore.  Promising may be just the right word in fact, when considering the progressive efforts that the NSMBA and the District of North Vancouver are taking  together in solidifying and legitimizing our presence on the Shore.

For the 2008 season, the District of North Vancouver has issued 28 permits, an increase of 8 permits from the previous year, with the majority being issued for Mount Fromme.

The NSMBA and the District are creating greater communication between themselves and all parties including: land users, land owners, the LSCR, and the District of West Vancouver.  With the District of North Vancouver acting as a centralized hub, there is no doubt that all stakeholders will benefit by this enhanced communication, while a formally structured program which solidifies the permit process is also implemented.

The Hardest Working Kids AroundIt could easily be argued that these two individuals are solely responsible for the enhanced efforts between the NSMBA and the District of North Vancouver. Without these two, who knows where we would be today? Dieter Bahr (the handsome kid on the right), Trail Director for the NSMBA, and Graham Knell (the other handsome kid on the left, and no, they are not twins!) of the Parks Department for the DNV.

We had just over a handful or so of the 28 builders show up to receive their permits and chat about the long overdue and anticipated season.

Here’s to a great upcoming season!

Howeydoin! + Jumps.

March 5th, 2008 by Ian

Last week I made the long journey to Tsawwassen to visit the legendary Brendan Howey and ride his jumps.

We Started our late session at around 4:00 by touching up the jumps with some shovel work. This lasted for about 5 minutes because I was too excited to ride.

Howey and I started warming up on the jumps and then to our surprise Nick Meyer showed up to show us how its done.

We all continued to ride until it got dark. All in all a rad session was had!

Thats all for now, hopefully I have something more exciting to report next time.

Bush whacking

March 4th, 2008 by Curtis

This past month Dylan and I have been chasing light and ripping trail like you wouldn’t believe. The tiger torch and road salt made an appearance early in the filming stages. After some lucky days when the light was firing, the temp was rising and the riding was dialed. We were able to kill it and things were all coming together. Bjorn has an amazing eye through the lens of a camera ,and MAN does it ever show in the footy we got. So after 3 1/2 months of trail building , spending basically all my weekends in the woods with Dylan creating our line. With the help from some AMAZING friends and long hours ,we managed to get it all done and put a great little segment together. So thanks to everyone that helped out . Look for the premier coming out at Sea Otter April 17-20.
